CHAPTER FIVE

I pounded on the door for the third time. The grayed and weathered wood shook under my frustration.

He had to be here. I’d checked to make sure the boat was still tied to the dock before I had come over to find him. It was. So, I assumed he had to be around here somewhere. I bet he was hiding in this stupid shack, hoping I would just go away.

Not happening. I needed some answers.

I raise my hand to knock again.

“Violet?”

I turned to see Tristan walking across his overgrown yard toward me. He looked surprised and mildly confused to see me there. Or maybe he was puzzled by my angry expression.

“I know you told me to stay away from you,” I said, “But I’m not leaving until you tell me what’s going on around here.”

Tristan stopped several feet away from me as if he was afraid to get too close to me. I had a feeling I did look a bit of my rocker. And rightfully so. There were some seriously strange happenings in this bayou.

“What do you mean?” he asked.

“Oh, no buddy, you aren’t going to play obtuse with me.” I repeatedly pointed a finger in his direction.

He blinked, clearly unsure of what to make of me.

Well, it was about to get a whole lot weirder for him. Believe you-me.

I opened my mouth to tell him what had happened so far this morning, but instead of a logical, coherent explanation, everything just sort of tumbled out of me.

“There was a message written in espresso beans on my floor telling me to leave now and then another one on my bathroom mirror saying go now, he’s dangerous. And my cat,” I shook my head and gaped at Tristan. “He was licking his--” I waved my hand in front of my crotch. “He was licking his--private bits. Which he has never done in front of me. Ever. And now he’d taken off into the bayou. He doesn’t even like grass. And he's scared of frogs.”

I stopped long enough to pull in a deep breath. “And I did hear weird noises last night. I think you heard them, too. And that’s why you freaked out and had to leave the cottage. And I’m also sure I saw some ghostly figure in the upstairs window in your house.” I pointed over my shoulder, “This house. And at Mally and Etienne’s house, too. So, either I’m going insane or there’s something really bizarre going on around here.”

Tristan stared at me for a moment, then he said, “You saw a ghost?”

I stared him. “I tell you all that stuff, and that’s your one take away?”

To my surprise, he actually smiled slightly. Even that small curve of his lips transformed him into an even more stunningly attractive man. Despite what Iris thought, I believed an argument could be made for Tristan being the most attractive Dubois brother. At least when he wasn’t acting crazy.

Of course, my sanity was absolutely debatable. Here we were talking about ghosts, and I was thinking about how attractive he was.
